Wooden shipbuilding has long been one of Bahrain’s most revered handicrafts, passed down through generations for centuries. Before the discovery of oil, the people of Bahrain relied heavily on the sea for their livelihood. Fishing, pearl diving, and transportation were their primary activities, and the mastery of wooden shipbuilding was essential to their way of life. The craft of shipbuilding became particularly prominent in the coastal areas of Muharraq and Manama, with the former continuing to serve as the heart of this tradition today.
Although the industry has declined, there are still a few artisans who have inherited and mastered the craft of wooden shipbuilding, particularly along the shores of Muharraq. Historically, Bahrain was home to multiple shipbuilding centers, but today, Muharraq stands as the last region in Bahrain where the art form continues to thrive. The village and city of Muharraq were once famous for their wooden ships, with each area of Bahrain contributing unique craftsmanship and specialized tools to the trade.
Among the many types of wooden ships that were constructed in Bahrain, the “Baggara” stands out as one of the most iconic. This large, elegant vessel, measuring up to 16 meters in length, was primarily used for fishing. Its two-link construction, with the rear linkage set at an angle of 12 to 16 degrees, allowed it to anchor easily on the coast. The ship’s design incorporated both sails and oars, showcasing the innovative maritime techniques of the region’s shipbuilders.
In an effort to preserve this rich maritime heritage, this design concept is inspired by the Baggara ship itself, with a focus on its slender, graceful front, wide and lower back, and curvy edge lines along the deck. The main mast, sail, and ship’s frame are integral elements of the design, reflecting the ship’s historical features.
The primary objective of this project is to create a unique landmark for Muharraq that reflects the region’s deep history and honors its maritime craftsmanship. By bringing the memory of the Baggara ship to life, this design serves as a tribute to the ancient profession of shipbuilding and ensures that future generations will remember and appreciate the significant role that this industry played in shaping the region’s identity.
In homage to this rich history, we proudly present the project titled “Muharraq’s Baggara”—a celebration of Bahrain’s enduring maritime legacy.
